For any medical student US-Med or international medical graduate (IMG) once they pass the USMLE licensing exam and apply for the residency match, getting an interview call is very important. Furthermore, once they receive the interview invitation, it’s crucial to be well prepared for the day interview. What the components that convince the program director to call the student for the interview:
High scores in USME Step 1
High scores in USME Step 2CK
Number of attempts
US clinical experience
A good letter of recommendations
and
ERAS application
The main objective is to put together a strong application that includes everything that the program director is looking for; such as, high scores on the USMLE board exams, perfect letter of recommendations, an excellent clinical experience, and good personal statement.
If you include all these components that should be enough for any program call you for the interview. If you have a strong application and you wanted to open several doors for the interviews, you should apply to the mixture of programs. Also, you should also apply in multiple States. This way you will receive many interview calls, and it will increase the chances to match. The interview season starts from the end of October until February. This is the window when you will be getting the interview calls.
Many of the programs do invite for dinner, and this is an occasion for you to meet in an informal environment and build a relationship with your future team members.
On the day of the interview, arrive on time. Just in case, if you’re running late make sure to reach out to the program coordinator and let them know if you would be running late.
Before the interview makes sure that you research the program because most likely they will ask you a question, why are you interested in applying for their program? When you answer any question, look into the eyes of the interviewer and be confident. Your answer should be brief and to the point.
Prepare your questions that you will be asking to the program. This will express your interest in the program. I strongly suggest during the interview day do not use communication devices such as a cellphone or the laptop. Make an excellent first impression. Show excitement and enthusiasm. Dress to impress; you should wear business outfits
